The Abegweit Conservation Society is the only such Aboriginal organization in Canada. We respect both traditional knowledge and the science of conservation. This effective marriage of traditional concepts with scientific evidence was referred to as Two-Eyed Seeing — Etuaptmumk — by Mi’kmaw Elder Albert Marshall. Simply put, Two-Eyed Seeing is using one eye to see the strengths of Indigenous knowledge and the other to see the strengths of Western, or scientific, learnings.
We are very fortunate on Prince Edward Island to have a number of active watershed and environmental groups, focusing on particular geographic or ecological areas. At the Abegweit Conservation Society, our territory is the entire Island and its environments. Through dedicated initiatives as well as partnerships with like-minded organizations, our reach is broad.
